On 20 and 21 November, T-FACTOR will be organising two days of meetings to explore ‘temporary uses’ as strategic tools for a more sustainable, prosperous and inclusive urban development.
On the first day, in a meeting reserved for people with an invitation**, we will visit the temporary spaces co-created by the community of practice that has been articulated around design in the pilot area of La Ribera de Deusto and Zorrotzaurre. We will also visit the creative spaces that collaborate in this initiative and that form part of the innovation ecosystem that has made the creation of these spaces possible.
On the second day of the meeting (attendance open by Inscription), we will look at three cases of three initiatives that have incorporated ‘temporary uses’ into their urban development strategy in London (Euston), Stockholm (Blivande) and Brussels (Communa). This will be followed by a round table discussion.
Afterwords, there will be a workshop with people that have received invitation**, where there will participate professionals in innovation and urban and social development to discuss how cities can promote and facilitate the practice of 'temporary uses' and integrate them into their strategy.
T-FACTOR is a Horizon 2020 innovation project, launched in June 2020 to explore and learn about the transformative potential of 'temporary uses' to drive urban regeneration in areas such as city design and governance.
T-FACTOR is actively working on the creation of its White Paper, a document that aims to be a reference in the systematisation of ideas and proposals to promote the integration of temporary uses in urban regeneration plans in European cities. Emphasising the urgent need to align with EU initiatives such as the European Green Pact and the New European Bauhaus, the White Paper will advocate for a dynamic policy framework that conceives temporary uses as instrumental tools to achieve fair, inclusive and sustainable urban development.
Bilbao participates in T-FACTOR as a pilot city with the area of La Ribera de Deusto and Zorrotzaurre to research, learn and build community around the practice of temporary uses. With this objective, the pilot strategy focuses on articulating the collaboration between different agents involved in the present and future of the island, to make visible and activate the talent represented by the creative initiatives and their professionals, the universities and their students, and the community that lives and works in the area.
This collaboration has materialised in a programme of co-creation of three temporary urban spaces designed and manufactured by students of two universities (Deusto and Mondragon) and the IED-Kunsthal School of Design, accompanied by professionals in design and creative spaces on the island, and by European experts from T-FACTOR's partner organisations. These spaces address current issues such as the resilience of cities in the face of climate change, the circular and collaborative economy, and the preservation of the memory of intangible cultural heritage.
Speakers
Sofia Anner is a project manager at Blivande focused on the development of Frihamnstorget. Frihamnstorget is an experimental urban container village being created on a 2600 m2 parking lot outside the cultural hub Blivande in central Stockholm. The “meanwhile” placemaking project is activating dead space in the development of a new residential area within Norra Djurgårdsstaden, one of Europe’s largest urban development projects, and has already made impact on the coming development plan. Sofia has led the pioneering work to secure Sweden’s first “flexible” build permit setting new precedence in how to interpret and implement the Swedish building code and law. She is also the chair of Frihamnens Kulturförening that activates Frihamnstorget with cultural activities.
Hampus is a cultural jack-of-all-trades and a serial cofunder of multiple participatory festivals, enduring non-profit associations and creative communities over the last 13 years. As a central figure in the Scandinavian “burner” scene, and an influential placemaker in Stockholm, he spearheaded in 2019 the creation of independent culture house Blivande and its adjacent container village Frihamnstorget in the city’s harbor district. In 2023 he launched the international night life project The Night Academy together with Julian Ueding from world-renowned club Sisyphos in Berlin.
Dr Eli Hatleskog is a Research Fellow at University of Arts London. She has an interest in collaborative spatial practices and specialises in trans/interdisciplinary urban research. Through T-Factor, Eli supported citizen-led meanwhile use through the creation of a community of socially engaged practice at Euston, London. Prior to this, with the aim of demonstrating and evaluating the impact of good design, she developed research into how people experience social value in the built environment and co-developed guidance for British architects in the RIBA ‘Social Value Toolkit for Architecture’ (2020). Together with Professor Flora Samuel (University of Cambridge, UK) she edited ‘Social Value in Architecture’ (AD 2020) and won the 2020 RIBA President’s Medal for Research – Cities and Community for ‘Mapping Social Values’.
Holder of a master's degree in law, Maxime Zaït co-founded the Communa association in 2013, using abandoned buildings to open spaces to communities, with the aim of helping to make Brussels more affordable, democratic, resilient and creative. In 2022, he returns from a 9-month tour of discovery of urban commons across Europe, following which he begins academic research on the links between urban commons and alternative forms of property, in legal theory , within the Vrij Universiteit Brussels. He is also administrator of the Yes We Camp and sits on the Supervisory Board of the Plateau Urbain cooperative as well as on the Impact Committee of the Bellevilles property company. It is now working to support the deployment of urban commons in Europe.
Interested in design as a tool for building solutions and futures, mainly to create collective processes and experiment with new models. My professional career is linked to hybrid innovation projects, located at the intersection between different disciplines such as design, urbanism and social mediation. I am co-founding partner of Tipi, where I am in charge of researching new areas and working methodologies. I am focused on the design of innovative processes, programmes and services for the public and community spheres.
